The C.A.M. Report
Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Fair, Balanced, and to the Point
  • About this web log

This blog ran from 2006 to 2016 and was intended as an objective and dispassionate source of information on the latest CAM research. Since my background is in pharmacy and allopathic medicine, I view all CAM as advancing through the development pipeline to eventually become integrated into mainstream medical practice. Some will succeed while others fail. But all are treated fairly here.

Consumer Alert: “Natural” weight loss products

The FDA has told Young You Corporation to recall its supplements sold under the following names.

    Tainted drugs

    • Slimbionic
    • One Weight Loss Pill
    • SlimDemand Capsules
    • Botanical Weight Loss

Lab analysis of these products found they contain sibutramine (an active ingredient of an FDA-approved drug called Meridia for dieting).

FDA advises that these products pose a threat to consumers because sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke.

The products were sold and distributed nationwide via the internet and at the company’s Weight Loss and Rejuvenation Center in Tarzana, Ca.

If you have used them, stop, and contact your physician if you’ve experienced any side effects.
