Is there a role for CAM to treat ADHD?

Researchers at Trinity College, in Ireland, reviewed the latest scientific evidence of the effectiveness and safety of CAM treatments in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Here’s what we know.

  • There’s evidence from a large study that neurofeedback has positive effects on reducing children’s symptoms of ADHD.
    • But most recent studies have generally yielded negative results.
  • Recent studies of supplements of essential fatty acids in children with ADHD clearly showed lack of superiority compared with placebo.

The bottom line?

The authors concluded, “Currently, there is no proof that complementary medicine provides a better alternative for children who have ADHD than treatments that are currently available.
