Warning. Others have drawn similar conclusions, as noted here and here.

Now, researchers from McGill University, in Montreal have reviewed the evidence for black cohosh to treat menopausal symptoms, again.

First, the details.

  • Among 288 English language references, 9 studies were of sufficient scientific rigor to be worth reviewing.

And, the results.

  • 6 studies demonstrated a significant improvement in the black cohosh group compared to placebo.
  • Based on analysis of data available from 7 studies, preparations containing black cohosh improved overall symptoms by 26%.

The bottom line?

The authors concluded, “Given that black cohosh is one of the most frequently used herbal medications for menopausal vasomotor symptoms in North America, more data are warranted on its effectiveness and safety.”

That’s 3 reviews in 2 years that have come to essentially the same conclusion.
