High Blood PressureTai Chi

Effect of tai chi on blood pressure

Researchers from Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston have reviewed the medical literature.

First, the details.

  • A review of the results of 26 studies (English or Chinese language) in patients with and without cardiovascular conditions was conducted.
  • Studies included 9 randomized controlled trials, 13 nonrandomized studies, and 4 observational studies.

And, the results.

  • 22 studies (85%) reported reductions in blood pressure with tai chi (3-32 mmHg systolic and 2-18 mmHg diastolic).
  • No adverse effects were reported.

The bottom line?
The authors concluded it’s “a practical, nonpharmacologic adjunct to conventional hypertension management.”
