FDA will consider regulations to limit salt in processed foods

The health consequences of salt in our diet have been debated. The mainstream believes there’s a connection between high salt intake, increased blood pressure, and then cardiovascular disease and death.

Others disagree.

Now, the FDA will weight in.

The US Department of Agriculture suggests that young adults should limit their daily sodium intake to 2,300 mg. That’s significantly lower than the 3,400 mg actually consumed, according to data from The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

On November 29, 2007, the FDA will re-examine the evidence for limiting salt intake, and pros and cons of developing a food additive regulation for salt.
