Bottled water as a source of calcium

Calcium intake in North America is substantially below recommended amounts. Now, bottlers of water think they have the solution. And they have a study for support.

A literature review concludes that calcium that is adding to mineral water is absorbed the same as in milk. Then, the body handles the calcium the same way.

Actually, at least two other studies support high-calcium bottled water.

  • High calcium mineral water was “effective prophylaxis against postmenopausal bone loss” compared to low-calcium water
  • A modest dose of calcium (172 mg) in mineral water inhibited bone resorption and iPTH secretion (a marker of bone metabolism) in a population of young, healthy males
